Momspirational Monday Series- Theresa from A Girlfriend’s Guide to Parenting

Happy Momspirational Monday!!! It’s another Monday, so there is another fantastic mom to feature!  I hope you all have been enjoying this series as much as I have.

This week I am excited to feature one of my favorite new bloggers, Theresa from  Girlfriend’s Guide to Parenting.  I originally discovered this blog through her photo posts on Instagram, they were witty, amusing and more often than not hit home and that is exactly how her blog is as well.  If you are a new mom, 1st time mom, or have been a mom several times over you need to bookmark Girlfriend’s Guide to Parenting and start following her on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Want to hear more about Theresa and how she runs her blog, manages a household, a toddler and a full time job? Here we go…

Tell me about you!

I am a mom to Madeleine, who is 21 months old and wife to my hubby Randy. We started dating in 1998, but didn’t get married until 2010! My hubby is 9 years older than me, which I think is great because men mature later than women. So, it’s perfect. I had a long distance relationship with my hubby until I finally moved from Minnesota to Reno/Tahoe, Nevada in 1999. It was the best decision I ever made. Also, I have a step- daughter who is now 20. Get this….I met her when she was 3. Time flies by when you are having fun. I have a Bachelors degree and an A.A. in Paralegal Studies and have worked in the legal field since 2001. I wanted to go to law school and I wanted to have a baby, so I threw it up in the air and got pregnant right away, so here we are. I am headed back to school in the Fall for Graphics Design. I grew up as the baby in the family; I have two older sisters who are 13 and 15 years older than me. So, I was the baby and somewhat an only child. I love living in Reno/Tahoe because of the active way of life (hiking, biking, camping and skiing). Growing up in MN…..we really weren’t outdoors people, so I have tried lots of new things since living out West.

What is your blog about?

Girlfriends Guide to Parenting is a fun place to get practical advice for Moms. Whether they are struggling with fitness issues or having a hard time for mommy me time, buts a place for support and a little practical parenting advice thrown in. I just want to share with readers that I am still finding my voice. My blog is still a work in progress.

What inspired you to start your blog?

I think there were several things that originally inspired me. The first being an outlet for creativity. Working in the insurance defense field….things are pretty analytical and somewhat boring. So, I craved creativity. The second being Madeleine. I wanted to find a way to be creative, but to also make a living at blogging.

What have you found to be a challenge when it comes to your blog?

The main challenge I have is gaining followers for my email list. You can create content all day long, but if you aren’t getting it out there to the masses to read, then it’s all for not. My other challenge is juggling it all and staying organized. There is a lot that goes into blogging. So, combine that with a 21 month old, hubby, friends and family and a full time job. It become hard to do it all.

What, so far, have you found to be the best, most rewarding, part of your business or blog?

Getting the feedback about a post was great. I haven’t gotten a lot, but the few that I did receive meant a lot. I think the feeling of completion that I get from each post and knowing that I am working towards a goal is rewarding. You can’t get from A to B without hard work. I am in the early stages of my blog so I am just taking each day as a marathon and not a sprint. I also feel rewarded in trying new things and figuring it out. For example….working on my blog, the look, etc., was not easy. It’s a learning process and I am still learning.

How do you stay organized? Do you feel like you have a good work/life balance?

I stay organized by having systems in place. I know it doesn’t sound exciting, but eliminating the decision making each day relieves a lot of time and energy and stress.

My hubby and I have certain roles each day. I lay out M’s clothes, he grabs them and dresses her. I feed M breakfast and he does dinner. I do the drop off and he does the pick up. Its little things that keep us organized. I also put everything on the calendar. All my appointments, baby’s appointments and my blogging scheduled posts. I also have placed reminders on my phone to post to social media. I just started using Co-Schedule. It seems like a great program that is tied into my WordPress blog…..but haven’t done too much in it yet.

Do you have any tips for the mommas out there wanting to start a blog?

I would say just do it. You can do all the planning in the world, but if you don’t get started…you are just sitting on the sidelines. It will never be perfect, so let it evolve over time. Also, try not to compare yourself to other bloggers. There are so many great bloggers out there, but we have all started at different times and at different levels. So, I would say to try and focus on you and your blog. Don’t compare yourself because it will make you feel defeated. Self doubt is the worst!

What does your work space look like?

We had a shared office space between myself and the hubby. I have a desk and my hubby has a desk. His is more of a dumping ground. My desk is clean and organized. We have an entire wall dedicated to calendars and message boards. It’s a Pottery Barn look. Black, white and red…..but I am thinking of changing it up to look more girly and remove my hubby’s desk

When you aren’t working or chasing your little, what can we find you doing?

I love to take some “me” time and go to a Spinning class, a day at the spa, a Starbucks run with a good self-help book. I also love to go hiking, running and spending time with my girlfriends and family. Friday nights are date nights in for us. We put Madeleine to bed and then we will have a cocktail, talk and eat pizza. Yes, it ends with watching Shark Tank and Dateline, but it’s relaxing and cozy.

Who is your biggest support?

I would say my hubby. He supports me in anything I do, professionally, personally and emotionally. I depend on my group of best girlfriends and my family as my support system. Another big support is Madeleine’s teachers from school. They watch Madeleine and we need a date night out or a day to get something done. Our only family support out here in Reno was my Mom. She would watch Madeleine when we would go out and then watch Madeleine on Fridays. My mom passed away a year ago and she was my biggest support for everything. She was a big help with Madeleine when she was first born as well.

Being a mom is tiring in itself, how do you relax and unwind?

I love going up to our bedroom and getting cozy under the blankets. I put my bed warmer on and read a book or watch Real Housewives.  I love to unwind at the spa or getting a pedicures.

I also love to unwind at the hot tub. We live in a community where we have a pool and a hot tub and we will go down there and just relax with a cocktail.

And just for a little fun…

If you could work from anywhere int he world, where would it be?

Honestly, I would love to just be able to work from home. That would be amazing. If I had to pick fun places besides that, I would love to be able to work from our vacation spots. We like to travel to Hawaii, so that would be amazing!

What are your three favorite places in the world?

Hawaii, London and Minnesota

Do you have a favorite show you are currently obsessed with?

We are obsessed with House of Cards. Also, we love to watch Homeland. Of course I love all the Real Housewives and VanderPump Rules shows. Anything on Bravo and I’m hooked. It’s my guilty pleasure.

Thanks for participating Theresa!
